Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is currently the No. 1 cause of death in the United States and, with the exception of 1918, has held that position since 1900. At present, 64 million people in the United States have some form of CVD. The public health burden caused by CVD continues to affect the country in terms of cost, life expectancy, and hospital care.
