The prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) has become epidemic in Western society. The direct and indirect medical costs of caring for patients with type 2 DM and its complications are staggering and will continue to grow with the increasing incidence of the disease. Studies show that preventive treatment, such as lifestyle changes and potentially pharmacologic therapy, may reduce the risk for diabetes and its complications, potentially reducing the costs of the disease.
