In the young rat, the addition of potassium metabisulfite or tannic acid in the diet decreases the fecal excretion of phosphorus, but increases its urinary excretion, whereas the addition of ethanol induces opposite results. These different effects are additive. On the other hand, the ethanol increases the urinary excretion of calcium, but only in the animals which receive neither metabisulfite nor tannic acid.
