There are a reported 100,000 people in the UK with a stoma (McCahon, 1999), and it is thought that about 20% of them will have experienced clinically significant psychological problems following their stoma-forming surgery. This article examines some of the most common problems encountered, and offers suggestions for nurses in the community in their management.
