C.R. Snyder and T.R. Elliott (this issue, pp. 1033-1054) propose a four level matrix model for graduate education in the 21st century. The model is critically reviewed and found to be robust and heuristic. Several critical issues confronting training directors in the 21st century that are not acknowledged by Snyder and Elliott are identified and discussed.
