Despite the fact that epilepsy disproportionately affects children, a lack of information exists on cognitive and behavioral side effects of anticonvulsant drug (AED) use in children. This review discusses suggested approaches to optimizing the neurological and psychological well-being of children with epilepsy. Recommended is a multifaceted approach that focuses on evaluating cognitive and behavioral issues in children with epilepsy, staying vigilant to the potential adverse effects of several older AEDs, and employing a wide range of multidisciplinary treatments.
