The idea is more important than the experiment.

Experimental science needs both idea and rigorous technical methodology. Modern science has the ability to measure with great ease and accuracy. There is a danger that this facility leads to the proliferation of experiments that are performed for the sake of measurement and not driven by idea. It is proposed that creative idea is best produced in an atmosphere of freedom to challenge the wisdom of the past. Teams that are multidisciplinary and cross cultures may produce the best ideas. Science should reanalyse the importance of quality of idea in science and the conditions in society that produce it.
