The increasing girth of Americans is a major public health issue that also has a substantial economic impact. Consequently, physicians are being encouraged to diagnose and treat their overweight and obese patients. This article reports on the results of a study designed to gain insight into Minnesota physicians' own health habits, their efforts to recognize unhealthy weight gain and obesity among patients, and their attempts to communicate with their patients about their weight.
