In a number of caimans (Caiman sclerops) we were unable to find traces of myoglobin in any of the histologically clearly cross-striated cardiac and skeletal muscles using spectrometric methods. The red colour of the heart is due to a high concentration of cytochrome c. This substance was also found in the muscles of the neck, back, tail, and the anterior extremities.
