Biliary atresia: Kasai and liver transplantation.

Liver transplantation is now a reality in Singapore following the first successful liver transplant operation performed in September 1990. It opens up a new lease of life for children with biliary atresia who would otherwise ultimately die. In the management of biliary atresia, liver transplantation must complement the Kasai operation in order that maximum benefits to the patient is achieved. A review of both the procedures is presented and a management policy for such patients outlined.
