Even though a professional approach in Swiss gerontological work was established early on in the process, institutional entrenchment of gerontological research and education happened very late; this is particularly true for the German-speaking part of Switzerland. Further development of gerontological research did not take place before the 1990s, and it took several years longer before gerontological master programmes were institutionalised at the universities. The contribution describes and analyses the development and current situation of gerontological studies in Switzerland (a comparatively small state, which will continue to depend on close cooperation with its neighbouring states in order to develop gerontology).
