Abstract

OBJECTIVE

To evaluate the involvement of proinflammatory and oxidative stress markers in gingival tissue in individuals with chronic periodontitis.

SUBJECT AND METHODS

Eighteen subjects were divided in two groups: experimental (age 52.9+/-5.0) and control (age 51.1+/-9.6). The activities of enzymatic antioxidants such as catalase, glutathione peroxidase (GPx), glutathione S-transferase (GST), glutathione reductase, nonenzymatic antioxidants: total glutathione and reduced glutathione, oxidized glutathione (GSSG), thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), and myeloperoxidase activity (MPO) were evaluated in gingival tissues from interproximal sites. Statistical differences between groups were determined by independent Student t test and P<.05.

RESULTS

Individuals with periodontal disease exhibited a significant increase in the activities of MPO, GPx, GST, and also in TBARS and GSSG levels in gingival tissue compared to the control group (P<.05).

CONCLUSION

The results of the present work showed an important correlation between oxidative stress biomarkers and periodontal disease.

评估慢性牙周炎患者牙龈组织中促炎和氧化应激标志物的参与情况。

对象与方法

18名受试者分为两组:实验组(年龄52.9±5.0岁)和对照组(年龄51.1±9.6岁)。评估了诸如过氧化氢酶、谷胱甘肽过氧化物酶(GPx)、谷胱甘肽S-转移酶(GST)、谷胱甘肽还原酶等酶促抗氧化剂的活性,非酶促抗氧化剂:总谷胱甘肽、还原型谷胱甘肽、氧化型谷胱甘肽(GSSG)、硫代巴比妥酸反应性物质(TBARS)以及髓过氧化物酶活性(MPO),这些指标均在邻面部位的牙龈组织中进行评估。组间差异采用独立样本t检验确定,P<0.05。

结果

与对照组相比,牙周病患者牙龈组织中的MPO、GPx、GST活性以及TBARS和GSSG水平均显著升高(P<0.05)。

结论

本研究结果表明氧化应激生物标志物与牙周病之间存在重要关联。
