Racial and ethnic minorities are disproportionately affected by chronic kidney disease (CKD) and often receive suboptimal care compared with Caucasians. Although the reasons for the disparities in care provided to minority groups have not been completely elucidated, data suggest that some of these disparities are linked to patient and staff educational deficits and modifiable practice patterns. Nurses can be influential in helping to eliminate racial disparities in CKD by cultivating a practice that recognizes the differences among racial and ethnic groups and provides culturally sensitive care and education, thereby providing consistent care for all patients.
