New programs for the prevention of blindness caused by diabetic retinopathy have been elaborated in different countries. The author analyses the results of a survey conducted in Switzerland in 5 University Ophthalmology clinics and in 9 regional centres, reviewing the ocular examinations and treatments applied to diabetic patients. A common attitude towards this disease is suggested.
