Abstract

The Indian catfish, Heteropneusted fossilis, was chemically thyroidectomized with thiourea. The uptake of radioactive phosphorus by the thyroid of these thyroidectomized fished was then studied. The effect of mammalian ACTH and parathormone on the thyroid uptake of P-32 by the treated fish was also studied. It was found that thiourea reduces the P-32 uptake considerably, whereas both the hormones, separately, elevate the P-32 levels in the thyroid to near control values.
