The gross and histological changes were studied in the liver of young pigs naturally infected with Aujeszky's disease. In the majority of the cases examined it was possible to detect small necrotic foci, scattered throughout the liver parenchyma, which corresponded histologically with intralobular or plurilobular areas of coagulative necrosis. At the periphery of the larger necrotic foci, inclusion bodies were also found in the hepatocytes of 9 of the 17 pigs examined. These intranuclear inclusion bodies showed various developmental features, similar to those reported quite frequently in herpesvirus infections of animals.
