The planning and development of an occupational health service (OHS) in a primary health care setting is described. A number of questions are addressed, including the relevance of an OHS for a developing country, the appropriate base for OHSs, and how to go about developing them. On the basis of early experiences with the Alexandra Health Centre project, it seems that the primary health care is an appropriate base for OHS provision and that it is possible to develop the service as a model for future OHS provision.
