Abstract
Age-specific prevalence of stroke in a population above 15 years was examined in five municipalities in Northern Norway. The examined population included 16,115 individuals of a total population of 19,850. The WHO-definition of stroke was applied. Average prevalence of stroke in the populations 15 years and over was 18.4 per 1,000. Males debutated five years earlier than females. 79% of stroke patients lived at home and 21% in nursing homes and hospitals.
