Principles of migraine diagnosis and management. A synthesis.

Migraine headache exacts a significant toll on patients in the United States and worldwide, and although numerous effective treatments are available, the disorder can be a challenge to diagnose, and consequently, often remains underdiagnosed and undertreated. New practice guidelines developed by international headache experts can help physicians overcome barriers to diagnosing migraine and implement better management for their patients. Physicians can accurately diagnose migraine, and effective management can be accomplished with pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic modalities.
