The highest mortality in developed countries is, according to the data from our as well as international literature, among people from low socioeconomic backgrounds. No recent data are available for the Czech Republic. We compared the estimated median life expectancy in 2001-2005 with the proportion of people with basic education only and with the proportion of unemployed in all regions within the Czech Republic. We confirmed significant negative correlation--people in regions with low socioeconomic status had lower estimated median life expectancy.
Despite the decline in the total and cardiovascular mortality in particular in the Czech Republic over the last 20 years, the highest mortality and shortest medium life expectancy continue to persist in the regions with the lowest socioeconomic status as measured by the educational status and unemployment.
