A simple near infrared grating spectrometer is described which employs a dry ice-cooled photomultiplier tube used in the pulse counting mode. Spectral data is recorded on punched paper tape enabling a large number of low intensity spectra to be averaged. The instrument is particularly useful for the study of weak near infrared airglow and auroral emissions from the upper atmosphere.
