The effects of ambient conditions on the spectral characteristics of exploding wires have been studied over wide ranges. It is found that the breakdown potential in the surrounding gas determines the type of wire explosion and consequently the spectra emitted. Rules are developed for the applicability of exploding wires in photochemical systems and in quantitative spectroscopy.
