Partial tooth loss is much less well tolerated by patients than was previously the case and, on occasions, when extraction is inevitable, they may seek prosthetic replacement. This paper explores some of the consequences of tooth loss that may cause difficulties in tooth replacement, particularly if replacement is delayed for some time.
An awareness of potential difficulties, particularly with posterior tooth replacement, will allow clinicians to make treatment decisions in the light of current evidence.
