[New diagnostic criteria for surgical indications in carpal tunnel syndrome].

The difficulties encountered in objectively diagnosing carpal tunnel syndrome are described. A new method for quantitative analysis of skin sensitivity is presented and its value in determining whether surgery is indicated or not illustrated in 134 cases. Postoperative results were evaluated by electroneurography and quantitative analysis of skin sensitivity. It was shown that even in cases with severe thenar atrophy, measurable improvement of the function of the median nerve can be achieved.
