Many hospitals are struggling with the implementation of a theory-based practice. Governing organizations in nursing (CNA and provincial bodies) have mandated theory as the guide for the future direction of our profession. This implementation process is a new and somewhat tenuous undertaking. There are pitfalls to be recognized, reckoned with and surmounted. There are numerous approaches to adoption of a theoretical framework. A large Metropolitan Toronto hospital forged ahead, perhaps a little eagerly, with the implementation of a specific conceptual framework (I. King, 1981). In retrospect, some time spent in teaching the foundations of theory and a more generalized approach to its value, may have helped nurses to accept and assimilate the worth of theory-based practice. An evaluation of how the implementation process was progressing brought about this observation and article.
