Functional disturbance and ophthalmoscopic feature are the most important parameters to diagnose optic neuropathy. Swelling of the optic disc is produced by 2 aetiologies: inflammation and ischaemia. The most frequent cause of retrobulbar neuritis remains multiple sclerosis.
