Severe burns, together with certain conditions of treatment, through their effect on verbal and non-verbal channels of communication, disorganise the 'tuning' process involved in early parent-child interactions. The effects risk being all the more patrhogenic since the mother is psychically incapacitated as far as her ability to mentalize the traumatic experience of the child is concerned.
