Despite population, social and cultural similarities between the countries in the region, large differences in the management of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) are found. This reflects the varying policies and health priorities of different countries, leading to differences in terms of renal replacement therapies (RRT) facilities. Hemodialysis remains the most frequent modality. Demographic and epidemiological transition has lead to an increased incidence of diabetes mellitus and arterial hypertension, but glomerulonephritis and interstitial nephropathies remain important causes of ESRD in the region.
