27 patients with locally advanced carcinoma (T2-T4) of the urinary bladder received preoperative pelvic irradiation of 4000 cGy in four weeks before cystectomy. Good response to radiotherapy and stage reduction was seen in cystectomy specimens of eight patients. They remained disease free during the mean follow-up of 73 months and had the mean survival time of 78 months. Twelve patients who had a residual tumour at cystectomy developed distant failure during the follow-up. The mean survival time for these patients was 28 months. The five-year survival rate of the entire group was 44%. Four patients (14%) died of postoperative complications.
27例膀胱局部晚期癌（T2 - T4）患者在膀胱切除术前行四周内盆腔照射4000 cGy。在8例患者的膀胱切除标本中可见对放疗的良好反应及分期降低。他们在平均73个月的随访期间无疾病复发，平均生存时间为78个月。12例在膀胱切除时存在残余肿瘤的患者在随访期间发生远处转移。这些患者的平均生存时间为28个月。整个组的五年生存率为44%。4例患者（14%）死于术后并发症。
