Abstract
The author reviews the origins of screening for squamous cell carcinoma of the cervix and the question of its value. Definitions of screening and case finding are given. The natural history of carcinoma of the cervix is explored. Barriers to screening and items that facilitate the process are described. A selection of the many recommendations which have been tabled since 1976 are documented. An appropriate screening plan for Canadian family physicians is suggested.
