Abstract

The data on the biochemical mechanisms of the development of neurodestruction are presented. The emphasis is given to glutamate- and aspartate-induced lesions of the brain in hypoxia, hypoglycemia, trauma. The common mechanisms related to secondary hyperfunction of glutamate- and aspartatergic systems underlie the development of chronic neurodegenerative processes in Alzheimer's disease, Huntington's disease, senile dementia, alcoholism, schizophrenia, etc. The basic pharmacological approaches to prevention of destructive processes in the central nervous system are considered.
