Abstract

This study assessed the accuracy and precision of a portable ultrasound unit which computes bladder volume after scans are made in the sagittal and transverse planes. 39 ultrasound measures were made on 20 children between the ages of one month and 16 years, and these measures were then compared with catheterized volumes. The mean difference of ultrasound minus true volume was 6.9 ml (SD 32ml). The ultrasound scanner was found to be accurate, inexpensive and easy to use for measuring post-voiding residual urine volumes in children with neurogenic bladder.
