White lesions of the oral mucosa are common. Dentists must be aware of the diseases that can cause these lesions, the terminology used to describe them histologically, and their significance to the patient. This paper represents a review of basic terminology and a brief description of common acanthotic and/or keratotic lesions of the oral mucous membranes.
