The development of tumours requires the simultaneous presence of a number of molecular perturbations. It is becoming increasingly clear that autocrine growth factor production, the topic of this review, is one such perturbation. Richard Lang and Antony Burgess summarize recent findings from a variety of in vitro and in vivo animal studies, and speculate on the possibilities for anti-growth factor therapy.
