To determine the resting metabolic rate (RMR) in a sample of Iranian women, and to evaluate the validity of predictive equations for estimating RMR in normal and obese subjects.
This cross-sectional study was conducted on a total of 187 healthy women aged 18-45 years. Anthropometric data were collected and subjects' RMR was measured by indirect calorimetry for 15 minutes following an overnight fast. RMR was also predicted using various types of formulas based on subjects' height, age, weight or fat-free mass. Body composition was estimated by bioelectric impedance analysis (BIA).
Measured RMR (mean ± SD) was found to be 1473 ± 296 kcal/day. The abbreviation formula overestimated RMR, while other formulas underestimated it. Harris-Benedict formula was valid among all BMI categories (normal weight, overweight, obese and morbidly obese). Two Schofield formulas were valid in normal weight, overweight and morbidly obese subjects; and Cunningham formula was valid only among overweight and obese women. Overweight and obese Iranian women had higher RMR in comparison with normal weight subjects (p<0.01); although after age and weight adjustment, the differences were not significant in any of the BMI categories.
The Harris-Benedict for mula provides a valid estimation of RMR at the group level in a range of normal-weight to morbidly obese Iranians. However, at the individual level, errors might be so high that using a measured value has to be preferred over an estimated value.
测定一组伊朗女性的静息代谢率(RMR),并评估预测方程在正常体重和肥胖受试者中估算RMR的有效性。
本横断面研究共纳入187名年龄在18 - 45岁的健康女性。收集人体测量数据,受试者在禁食过夜后通过间接测热法测量15分钟的RMR。还根据受试者的身高、年龄、体重或去脂体重,使用各种类型的公式预测RMR。通过生物电阻抗分析(BIA)估算身体成分。
测得的RMR(均值±标准差)为1473±296千卡/天。简化公式高估了RMR,而其他公式则低估了它。哈里斯-本尼迪克特公式在所有BMI类别(正常体重、超重、肥胖和病态肥胖)中均有效。两个斯科菲尔德公式在正常体重、超重和病态肥胖受试者中有效;坎宁安公式仅在超重和肥胖女性中有效。与正常体重受试者相比,超重和肥胖的伊朗女性RMR更高(p<0.01);尽管在调整年龄和体重后,任何BMI类别中的差异均无统计学意义。
哈里斯-本尼迪克特公式在一系列正常体重至病态肥胖的伊朗人群体水平上能有效估算RMR。然而,在个体水平上,误差可能非常大,以至于使用测量值比估计值更可取。
