The paper presents the results of a survey of preventive measures in the tanning industry ten years after the introduction of the National Health Service in Italy. The aims and procedures of the Occupational Health Service programmes of the Local Health Units in northern, central and southern Italy are described. A marked difference was observed between the southern and central-northern regions as regards size and quality of the occupational health services and the number of programmed activities aimed at risk assessment and preventive measures.
