In Alifa Rifaat's "My World of the Unknown," the female narrator's homoerotic encounter with a djinn functions as a radical brand of Islamic feminism that challenges Arabo-Islamic cultural perceptions of female sexuality as threatening. Rifaat reinterprets Islamic teachings and Arabic folklore to show how women's sexuality must be revered rather than feared.
