Interest is raising in bariatric procedures for the therapy of type 2 diabetes. Bariatric surgery does not only induce weight loss, but also improves glucose metabolism and other symptoms of the metabolic syndrome. Nevertheless, some important issues have not been clarified by clinical trials so far: Which patients benefit the most? How sustainable is a diabetes remission induced by surgery? And how serious are metabolic and psychiatric side effects of the surgical procedures?
