The accommodation-convergence bar was developed as a simple measuring and exercise instrument. For the ophthalmologist, it is a convenient means of measuring accommodation and convergence in the office, while patients can use it for home convergence and fixation exercises which they can monitor themselves. The A = C bar has also been used experimentally to eliminate the functional central scotoma in dyslexic children.
