Three common phenotypes of 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase (6-PGD) were identified by enzyme visualization following isoelectric focusing in photochemically polymerized polyacrylamide gels whereas in chemically polymerized gels no activity could be detected. Gene frequencies calculated from 429 individuals were 0.915 and 0.085 for 6-PGDA and 6-PGDC, respectively, similar to the gene frequencies of Japanese samples previously reported.
