The author's clinical experience, research results, and review of relevant literature suggest that a one-suture, nonlock continuous stitch technique for repairing perineal wounds may reduce postpartum perineal pain. The principles of this alternative suturing method involve taking large bites of tissue with continuous nonlocking stitches, avoiding several layers of suture material, approximating wound edges loosely, and placing subcuticular sutures well below the skin surface. No recommendation for a specific type of absorbable suture material is made. Research trials to document clinical observations and literature reports are needed.
