Periphytic bacteria found on the carapace and gills of crabs collected from near a tannery effluent outlet were shown to be able to concentrate chromium. By concentrating Cr, the bacteria contributed to the total Cr concentration of the crabs. Since crabs and other crustaceans are eaten by bottom feeding fish, bacteria may be contributing to the passage of Cr up the food chain.
