Abstract

PURPOSE

To review the long term clinical outcomes in the treatment of osteoid osteoma (OO) using radiofrequency ablation (RFA).

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Our retrospective study included 59 patients who were treated in the period from April 2001 to December 2012 due to a symptomatic OO using RFA. Here, the occurrence of complications and postoperative recurrence, as well as postoperative patient satisfaction were examined. Patients satisfaction was assessed by means of a telephone interview with the visual analogue scale (VAS).

RESULTS

Mean follow-up was 50 months (2 –116 months). The average size of the nidus was 6mm (range 2 – 14 mm). After initial radiofrequency ablation 11.8 % (7/59) of patient showed a recurrence of symptoms. Symptoms could successfully be treated by a second ablation in 5 patients. Assisted success rate was therefore 96.6 % (57/59). The complication rate was 5.1 % (2 major and one minor complication). Furthermore we report a very high patient satisfaction and acceptance of therapy.

CONCLUSION

RFA is a very successful therapy of symptomatic OOs with a high patient satisfaction.

Osteoid osteomas (OO) are rare benign bone tumors of the childhood and adolescence. Treatment of OOs with minimal-invasive radiofrequency ablation (RFA) shows a high patient satisfaction. RFA is by now the standard therapy of symptomatic OOs.

目的

回顾使用射频消融(RFA)治疗骨样骨瘤(OO)的长期临床疗效。

材料与方法

我们的回顾性研究纳入了59例在2001年4月至2012年12月期间因有症状的骨样骨瘤而接受RFA治疗的患者。在此,对并发症的发生、术后复发情况以及患者术后满意度进行了检查。通过视觉模拟量表(VAS)电话访谈评估患者满意度。

结果

平均随访时间为50个月(2 - 116个月)。瘤巢平均大小为6mm(范围2 - 14mm)。初次射频消融后,11.8%(7/59)的患者出现症状复发。5例患者通过第二次消融成功治疗了症状。因此辅助成功率为96.6%(57/59)。并发症发生率为5.1%(2例主要并发症和1例轻微并发症)。此外,我们报告患者对治疗的满意度和接受度非常高。

结论

RFA是治疗有症状骨样骨瘤的一种非常成功的疗法,患者满意度高。
