The blood serum sialic acid concentrations are recommended to be measured according to G. Sydow (1985) with the estimation of the results from the mean molar (E) and molar (E) extinction coefficients without using N-acetylneuraminic acid as the reference value. The E value for devices emitting polychromatic light (FEK-56M, KFK, KFK-2, SPECOL 211) is 132 sm-1.M-1, that for devices emitting monochromatic light (SF-4A), E = 138 sm-1.M-1. The results obtained by this method correlate with those of Hess' method in conditional units. The method is simple, no acetic acid is necessary for it, the stained complex formed is stable.
