The survival of patients with incurable carcinoma of the oesogastric junction is short. Amongst the various treatment options the choice must take into account the quality of survival offered to the patient. We think that surgery with oesogastric anastomosis offers the best palliation. To avoid both thoracotomy and cervicotomy we prefer palliative resection with oesogastric anastomosis through laparotomy alone.
