The mycoplasma genome has been investigated intensively in recent years. At first the primary goal was to define more clearly the genetic relationship between various species, but more emphasis has been put on determination of structure and function of the extremely small and A + T-rich genome. Part 1 reviews the current knowledge of taxonomy of Mycoplasma and Ureaplasma and the structure of genes for various stable RNAs.
