The primary care physician can use the framework for decision making outlined in this article to assess the burden of suffering from conditions that occur in the patients in his or her practice, to evaluate the evidence for the effectiveness of diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, and to decide whether specific efficacious preventive maneuvers are likely to be effective when implemented in daily clinical practice.
