Beatrice Allsop was one of the first nurses to receive a military medal for her bravery. Wounded in Béthune, when her casualty clearing station was shelled, she continued working until all her patients had been evacuated and the team of nurses transferred. She is emblematic of the thousands of nurses who volunteered for military service at the beginning of the Great War. Her example testifies to the spirit which drove these women serving on the Western Front.
