José Joaquín Aguirre MD (1822-1901) was elected Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Chile in 1867. He served for 13 years. A professor of Surgery and Anatomy he was the fifth Dean of the Faculty and the first President of the Medical Society of Santiago (1869). In 1889 he became Rector of the University of Chile, the first physician to occupy this high position.
