In a previous paper, we suggested that gorilla silverback males used odour as a chemosignal about levels of risk during interactions with extra-group males. We suggested that, rather than being monotonically associated with arousal as Masi and Bouret have now proposed in their commentary, the strength of an odour was a variable response to within as well as between group risks. We all agree that the phenomenon needs further investigation.
